Although the Tampa Bay area was visited b y Ponce de Leon in 1513, it was never developed by the Spaniards. At the time of the DeSoto expedition int the early 1500's the area was inhabited by Mocoso and Uzita tribes, but they disappeared by 1560. The first American settlers arrived in 1824 and Fort Brooke was established to protect the strategic Tampa Bay harbor. Development began after the territory became part of the United States in 1845.  Henry B Plant's railroad extention in 1884 provided access to new areas. In 1886 Vicente Martinez Ybor established a cigar factory in what is now called Ybor City.  The U.S. military helped with development, by using Tampa as an outfitting and embarkation port and today, MacDill Air Force Base is the headquarters for U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations .

Modern Tampa is prized by employers for its rich supply of multilingual talent. Starting with Cuban, Italian and Spanish immigrants in the 1800's, Tampa is now home to individuals hailing from over 130 nationalities . The Univiersity of South Florida attracts students from over 140 countries. 

Tampa honors its unique cultural diversity with a host of community events and festivals, everything from Festa Italiana to Ybor Aficionado Days to Tarpon Springs Greek communities Epiphany celebration, the largest in the Western Hemisphere.   

Tampa is growing, and has wonderful opportunities for everyone.
